Our family has embarked on virtual travels to various countries and regions. To explore these countries and their cultures, we have followed along with the festivals, cooked and eaten traditional foods, learned of traditional handicrafts with hands on exploration, along with many activities to immerse ourselves. Chronicled here are some of these activities.

Exploring China

Must See Introduction to China video by Pengfei Zhang

I am so excited to be exploring China with the girls this year! Elle has wanted to do this country for a few years now, but Pea and I had explored it a little when she was six, and she was worried that it would be repetitive. I have no doubt that at fourteen, she will appreciate to a much greater degree, the many layers this country and culture has to offer.

Brainstorming

It doesn't take much probing to think up dozens of associations with China, and here are a few that come to mind immediately:

    • Chinese New Year
    • Great Wall
    • Pandas
    • Calligraphy
    • Imperial City/ Ancient China
    • Acupuncture
    • Dim Sum
    • Scroll Paintings
    • Tea
    • Silk
    • Martial Arts/Tai Chi
    • Mao Revolution
    • Kites
    • Terracotta Soldiers
    • Chinese Zodiac
Ten minutes on the internet, and the list more than doubles! I'm really excited for all the opportunities. It's a shame we don't have a Chinatown in our area, but we have a few great authentic Chinese restaurants, and a few asian groceries to get us started.
